Role Overview
The Role
The People Relations Lead is our go-to person for complex people matters.
You’ll be the person leaders turn to when situations are tricky, sensitive or high-stakes — whether that’s performance, conduct, conflict, absence or organisational change. You’ll help the business make fair, consistent and well-judged decisions while protecting both our culture and the company.
This isn’t an admin HR role, and it isn’t a “process only” role. It’s about judgement, balance and confidence. You’ll need to be comfortable in the grey areas, able to challenge when needed and able to support people through difficult moments without losing momentum.
You’ll work closely with the Head of People & Culture and line manage our People Coordinator, helping to create a People function that is trusted, pragmatic and easy to work with
Requirements
Owning complex people matters
· Act as the main escalation point for complex or sensitive employee issues
· Lead on performance, conduct, grievances, absence and restructuring cases
· Support leaders through difficult conversations and decisions
· Provide clear recommendations and keep situations moving forward
· Help ensure outcomes are fair, proportionate and legally sound
· Offer appropriate emotional and practical support to employees and managers during difficult or sensitive situations, demonstrating empathy, discretion and sound professional judgement, and signposting to additional support where needed.
Managing risk and protecting the business
· Spot and manage people-related risk early
· Make sure our approach is consistent and defensible
· Challenge constructively where decisions could create legal or reputational risk
· Keep our policies and case handling aligned with employment law and best practice
· Identify themes or trends and share insight with the Head of People & Culture
Building confidence across the business
· Coach managers to handle issues earlier and according to best practice
· Provide practical advice and frameworks that help leaders feel confident
· Support a consistent and values-led approach to decision-making
· Help teams learn from situations so issues don’t keep repeating
Working as part of the People team
· Partner closely with the Head of People & Culture
· Line manage and support the People Coordinator
· Help create a People function that is approachable, calm and solutions-focused
· Contribute to a positive and resilient culture
What we’re looking for
Essential
· Strong experience handling complex employee relations matters
· Solid knowledge of UK employment law and how it applies in real life
· Confidence making judgement calls in sensitive situations
· Ability to support and influence managers at all levels
· Calm, pragmatic approach to tricky conversations
· Comfortable balancing empathy with clarity and accountability
· Experience in fast-paced environments
Desirable
· Experience supporting restructures or organisational change
· CIPD Level 5 qualified (or equivalent experience)
