9amHealth is specialized cardiometabolic care: a first of its kind, whole body approach to preventing and treating obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, and help with weight management. We offer custom care plans, prescription medications, and expert guidance to help our members live healthier every day.
9amHealth is a San Diego, California, based company led by the team behind mySugr, a successful diabetes management app acquired by Roche in 2017. 7Wire Ventures, Human Capital, Founders Fund, Define Ventures, Speedinvest, iSeed Ventures, and StartUp Health have backed 9amHealth, with a total funding of 25 million dollars. We are on a growth trajectory to achieve our mission of a more connected care approach for cardiometabolic health.
We're looking for a highly skilled Senior Full Stack Engineer who is excited about building in an AI native, agentic world. This is not a traditional frontend or backend role! It’s for engineers who:
use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) as a force multiplier,
think in terms of systems, workflows, and agents, not just endpoints and screens,
can turn ambiguous product problems into working, production-ready solutions,
want to help evolve our platform toward an agent-driven future in healthcare.
You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and other engineers to re-imagine how our systems are built, extended, and operated as AI becomes a first class part of the development process.
Build AI Native Systems
Design, implement, and operate backend and fullstack systems that incorporate LLMs, tools, and agents as core components;
Build agentic workflows (multi-step, tool using, stateful systems) that solve real product and operational problems;
Integrate LLMs safely and reliably into production systems, with attention to observability, cost, and failure modes.
Engineer with AI as a Partner
Use modern AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code/Codex/Pi/Cursor) to accelerate development, refactoring, and exploration;
Set patterns and standards for how AI is used in day to day engineering work;
Help the team move faster without sacrificing quality or clarity.
Product Driven Engineering
Collaborate closely with Product Management, Design, and other stakeholders to shape solutions, not just implement specs;
Translate high level goals into technical architecture and execution plans;
Contribute to roadmap discussions with a strong systems and platform perspective.
Own the System End to End
Design APIs, services, and data models (primarily backend leaning);
Ensure reliability, security, privacy, and scalability in a regulated healthcare context;
Operate and observe the system’s behaviour in the real world;
Improve developer experience and internal tooling where it unlocks leverage.
Required
7+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, with strong knowledge of major parts of our tech stack (AWS, Java, Typescript, Python)
Strong experience in building with LLMs in production, not just prototypes
Clear enthusiasm for the capabilities and opportunities of AI and agentic systems
Strong system design skills and comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces
Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Strong Plus
Experience designing, building, and operating long running workflows, background jobs, or distributed systems
Familiarity with healthcare, regulated products, or safety critical systems
Startup or fast moving product environment experience
What We Care About (Beyond the Resume)
You’re curious and opinionated about where software development is going
You ship and you iterate based on real world feedback
You don’t wait for perfect specs; you help create them!
You see AI as a new abstraction layer, not a gimmick
Compensation: This role offers a salary of up to $175,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
