The Subject Matter Expert (SME) provides technical expertise and industry insight to support the design and development of educational courses on high‑performance commercial buildings. The SME will ensure technical accuracy, industry relevance, and practical applicability of course content, working closely with instructional designers, project managers, and other contributors. This role bridges real‑world building performance practice with adult education, translating complex technical concepts into clear, engaging, and actionable learning materials.
It is estimated that the SME will spend approximately 5-8 hrs per week on this High-Performance Commercial Buildings courses development work until end of September 2026.
Responsibilities
Ensure course materials promote learning and helps to measure and evaluate student’s ability to achieve important, real-world competencies (knowledge, skills, performance tasks, behaviors)Advise on technical topics (HVAC, envelope, energy performance, decarbonization)Contribute to and review course content, incorporate real‑world case studies (contributing data, exemplars, and tools)Update course outline and schedule to reflect any changes made in the content and or assessmentsInclude clear guidelines and evidence of achievementAny curriculum revisions needed to ensure material is current, relevant, and delivers quality learning experienceUpdates needed to meet industry standards, requirements and best practicesDefine accurate, clear, specific, relevant learning outcomes for the courseEnsure competencies and learning outcomes are aligned with course content Update other pertinent information, including required learning materials, software, technology, assessments, modules
Requirements
Minimum Post-secondary Diploma in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture is required. An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be consideredDemonstrate deep, applied knowledge in high‑performance commercial construction and design, not just theoretical familiarityPossess direct, recent experience working on commercial projects—not only academic or policy backgrounds; as this is for course development, the SME must be able to support adult learningBe familiar with relevant codes and standardsExperience and fluency with Office 365 (MS Word, Outlook and PowerPoint)Experience with videoconferencing technology (MS Teams)Fluent in English reading and vocabularyComfortable speaking to the publicPositive & respectful attitudeAbility to read, interpret and deliver specific curriculumExcellent communication skillsAbility to organize and present written information
Strongly preferred
Professional credentials (e.g., LEED AP, CEM, ASHRAE certifications)Prior experience developing or reviewing training content
