Role Summary
ALX Africa is seeking an experienced and strategic Alumni Community Specialist to lead the growth, engagement, and career outcomes of the South Africa alumni community. This role will oversee a community of 20,000 graduates while directly managing the Alumni Community Associate to ensure strong execution of engagement initiatives.
The Alumni Community Specialist will be responsible for building a high-impact alumni ecosystem that drives belonging, professional growth, hiring outcomes, entrepreneurship, and brand advocacy. This includes developing community strategy, strengthening employer and ecosystem partnerships, and ensuring alumni remain active contributors to the ALX network.
This role requires a strong community leader who can operate both strategically and operationally, someone who can translate vision into programmes, partnerships into opportunities, and data into decisions. The ideal candidate is passionate about youth employment, ecosystem building, and developing scalable community systems.
Specific Responsibilities
1. Alumni Community Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and execute the South Africa alumni community strategy aligned with ALX career outcomes and community impact goals.
- Provide day-to-day guidance and performance management for the Alumni Community Associate and Relationship Manager Fellow.
- Build scalable systems that strengthen alumni belonging, engagement, and long-term participation in ALX.
- Identify opportunities to leverage alumni as mentors, ambassadors, hiring partners, and ecosystem connectors.
- Ensure community programming aligns with ALX organisational priorities including career outcomes, entrepreneurship, and brand growth.
- Serve as the primary point of accountability for alumni community success in South Africa.
2. Community Growth & Engagement
- Oversee the design of engagement programmes that deepen alumni connection to ALX and to each other in the hub and around the country.
- Support the development of alumni leadership structures including ambassadors, volunteers, and mentors.
- Drive initiatives that increase alumni participation in events, programmes, and career initiatives.
- Strengthen alumni identity and pride through meaningful shared experiences.
- Ensure strong engagement across physical hubs and digital platforms.
- Ensure physical connection and engagement is happening outside of the hub across the country.
- Support the Relationship Manager Fellow in personal engagement with alumni and gathering impact stories to better understand and support the community.
3. Career Outcomes & Ecosystem Partnerships
- Build relationships with employers, ecosystem partners, and industry stakeholders to expand opportunities for alumni.
- Support initiatives that connect alumni to employment, freelance work, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
- Collaborate with partnerships and careers teams to align community activities with hiring pipelines.
- Identify opportunities to showcase alumni talent to employers through showcases, demo days, and networking events.
- Support alumni founders through ecosystem connections and exposure opportunities.
4. Events Strategy & Experience Oversight
- Provide strategic direction for alumni events to ensure alignment with career outcomes and engagement goals.
- Oversee execution of flagship alumni experiences including networking events, career sessions, and ecosystem activations.
- Ensure events deliver strong participation, experience quality, and measurable outcomes.
- Support the Associate in planning high-impact community moments and flagship experiences.
5. Communications & Community Voice
- Ensure consistent, high-quality alumni communications aligned with ALX brand and voice.
- Guide storytelling that highlights alumni success, impact, and career journeys.
- Support development of content strategies that strengthen alumni identity and advocacy.
- Act as a voice of the alumni community internally by sharing insights, needs, and opportunities.
6. Data, Insights & Performance Management
- Own alumni community KPIs including engagement, participation, and career outcomes.
- Use data insights to improve programming, engagement approaches, and community systems.
- Review community reports and dashboards to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Ensure accurate alumni tracking related to employment outcomes and engagement.
- Continuously improve community operations through testing and iteration.
7. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Marketing, Recruitment, Learning, and Partnerships teams to align alumni initiatives.
- Support recruitment efforts by activating alumni as community ambassadors.
- Collaborate with regional and continental community teams to share best practices.
- Contribute to Africa-wide alumni community initiatives where relevant.
Skill Requirements - Essential
- 5+ years experience in community management, alumni relations, programme management, partnerships, or ecosystem development.
- 3+ years of experience in managing team members.
- Demonstrated experience building or scaling communities or networks.
- Strong stakeholder management and partnership development skills.
- Experience designing programmes that drive engagement or career outcomes.
- Strong leadership, project management and organisational skills.
- Data-driven decision making ability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to balance strategy and execution.
- Passion for youth employment, education, and community impact.
- Experience managing community metrics and dashboards.
Skill Requirements - Preferable
- Experience working in tech education, workforce development, or youth employment.
- Experience working with employer partnerships or ecosystem organisations.
- Familiarity with CRM platforms such as HubSpot.
- Understanding of South Africa's youth employment and tech ecosystem.
- Experience managing large scale communities (10,000+ members).

Employment Type
This role is a full-time position. You will be required to work from the office at least 3 days per week.
