About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Head of Biodiversity and Habitats to join our Natural Ecosystems team on a fixed-term basis. In this role, you will lead the design and delivery of innovative projects focused on ocean biodiversity and habitat conservation.
You will play a pivotal role in driving strategic outcomes, managing high-impact projects, fostering key partnerships, and championing science-led, policy-informed approaches to marine conservation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and mentoring a high-performing team to achieve project milestones and organisational impact.
- Overseeing the planning, execution, and monitoring of all biodiversity and habitat initiatives, ensuring delivery within scope, time and budget.
- Building and maintaining collaborative relationships with partners, government agencies, academic institutions, and other stakeholders.
- Representing Minderoo at all levels internally and externally at events and conferences, both global and national.
- Identifying and influencing policy change, working with stakeholders at local, national and international levels to promote sustainable ocean governance.
- Staying at the forefront of research and policy developments in ocean biodiversity and habitat conservation.
- Developing and maintaining strategic partnerships, including negotiation, contract management, and relationship stewardship.
- Contributing to leadership planning and strategy development within the Natural Ecosystems team, including annual budgeting and organisational alignment.
Qualifications
About You
You are an experienced conservation leader with a strong background in marine science or environmental policy, and a demonstrated ability to design and manage impactful conservation programs.
You bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification (PhD preferred) in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field, with at least 10 years’ experience working at the nexus of science, governance, policy and impact.
- Deep knowledge of conservation science, marine ecosystems, and environmental policy frameworks.
- A strong reputation and established networks across policy, eNGO, academic and government sectors in ocean conservation.
- Proven experience in managing complex conservation projects, including engagement with communities and governments.
- Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to translate findings into policy and practical impact.
- A strategic mindset, excellent communication skills, and a passion for ocean conservation.
