Title: Packaging Project Engineer
Location: Richmond, VA
Job Type: Full-Time (Direct Hire)
Compensation: Up to $105,000, based on experience
Position Overview
We are seeking a Packaging Project Engineer to lead and support engineering initiatives within a regulated manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for overseeing packaging equipment projects from concept through implementation, ensuring systems are efficient, compliant, and aligned with production goals.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing projects independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality results.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Implementation
Support packaging equipment projects for both new product launches and existing operations
Develop packaging line concepts, layouts, and system integration plans
Oversee equipment installation, startup, and performance verification
Create and execute testing and qualification protocols
Participate in vendor coordination, including equipment evaluations and acceptance testing
Project Coordination
Manage multiple projects, including timelines, scope, and budgets
Track costs and assist with forecasting and capital planning
Provide regular updates and communicate progress to internal stakeholders
Review technical proposals, contractor submissions, and change documentation
Collaboration & Support
Partner with teams across operations, quality, supply chain, and engineering
Coordinate efforts across departments to ensure smooth project execution
Help resolve technical and operational challenges throughout the project lifecycle
Quality & Compliance
Ensure adherence to regulatory standards and internal procedures
Support change management and validation activities for new systems
Identify opportunities to improve processes, efficiency, and consistency
Promote best practices in a regulated manufacturing setting
Documentation & Training
Develop and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and reports
Keep accurate records of project activities and outcomes
Train team members on new equipment and processes as needed
Provide guidance and support to less experienced staff
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
At least 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment (regulated industries preferred)
Background in equipment implementation, startup, and validation
Core Skills
Strong organizational and project management capabilities
Ability to handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision
Solid problem-solving and analytical thinking skills
Effective written and verbal communication
Familiarity with regulatory standards in manufacturing environments
Ability to interpret technical diagrams and engineering drawings
Experience with design tools (e.g., CAD) is a plus
Comfortable leading cross-functional initiatives
